■エリオット・アーウイットElliott Erwitt

先日来日して福山雅治とコラボレーションしていたアーウイット。日本でもファンが多い写真家で、僕も大好きです。アーウイットの写真は対象（人でも動物でも）に対する愛情とユーモアに溢れた眼差しが感じられ、とても良いです。
下でも紹介しています、 アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソンとともにマグナム・フォトの主要メンバーの一人。

アーウイットが、 こう言っているのを読みました。 「いい作品を撮るには、 一つのところに長く留まらないこと。 旅に出るのはいいことだ。 常に新鮮な目を保っていられる」

1928年、ロシア移民の両親の元にパリで生まれた。11歳のときに渡米。写真家としての活動は1949年から。
1953年、ロバート・キャパの推薦でなんと25歳の若さでマグナムのメンバーとなり、以後第一線で活躍。

フォトジャーナリズムにパーソナルな視点を持ちこんだ、マグナム第2世代の代表写真家と高い評価を受けている。

1928 ロシア人の両親のもと、フランスで生まれる。

1939 戦争から逃れ、アメリカに移住、LAのシティ・カレッジで写真を学ぶ。

1948 ニューヨークへ移住し映画を学ぶ。エドワード・スタイケン、ロバート・キャパらと出会う。

1949 ニューヨークで写真家としての活動を開始。ロバート・フランクとパリで半年 部屋を共有する。イタリアにも長期滞在。

1951 徴兵され、ドイツとフランスに駐留。軍隊生活を写真にした作品が、雑誌「LIFE」の写真コンテストの新人賞に入賞。

1953 除隊後、世界的な写真家であったロバート・キャパの推薦で、マグナム・フォトに参加。ニューヨークを拠点に本格的な写真家活動を開始。

1955 「ファミリー・オブ・マン」展に出品。

1963 ワシントンD.C. のスミソニアン美術館で個展。

1965 ニューヨーク近代美術館で個展。

1966〜68 マグナム・フォトの会長を務める。

1972 シカゴ美術館で個展。

1988 写真集「Personal Exposures」出版。 同写真展がパリ、ニューヨーク、東京などを巡回。

1991 写真集「オン・ザ・ビーチ」出版。

1992 写真集「我々は犬である」出版。同写真展が日本、アメリカを巡回。

1994 写真集「ふたりのあいだ」出版。写真展「カップルズ」が日本各地を巡回。

1998 写真集「美術館にいこうよ ! 」出版。写真展が日本各地を巡回。　

2001 写真活動50周年記念として回顧展−幸福の横顔−　が東京と京都で開催される。 同年、集大成写真集「Elliott Erwitt Snaps」を出版。

2002　マグナム・フォト創設55周年記念写真展 「スマイル&スマイル／100のほほえみ」 に来日。※同時開催　エリオット・アーウィット＋福山雅治コラボレート写真展

Personal Exposures

この表紙の写真は、よくポストカードにも使われています。
フェアーグラウンド・アトラクションの「ファースト・キッス」 というアルバムのジャケットにも使われています。ちなみにこのバンド、テクノ全盛の８０年代後半、イギリスに突如出てきたアコースティック・バンド。イギリスの駅前とかで演奏していたのをレコード会社の人たちに認められてデビューしました。なんだか「ゆず」みたい。ボーカルはエディ・リーダーさんという女性で、ボニー・レイットを思い起こさせるような暖かい声です。キスしている男女のジャケットそのままの音を想像してもらえればだいたいあっています。現題はthe first of a million kisses（100万回のうちの一番最初のキス）。ドリームズ・カム・トゥルーもこのバンドのファンで、eyes to me とかが入っている４枚目のCDのタイトルは「million kisses」と、そのまま使っていました。

　 Amazon.com When he's not on assignment, the indefatigable Elliott Erwitt often takes his camera and heads for a museum, where, he says, finding interesting and amusing subjects to photograph is "like shooting fish in a barrel." He proves his point with this wide-ranging collection of images from the last 45 years that look at lookers from Cambodia and Japan to New York and Paris. There are countless characteristically mischievous moments here: a middle-aged couple pores over the Clouet painting of two topless women--one the king's mistress preparing for her bath and the other her sister, tweaking her nipple. In a snapshot on the facing page, a soldier fondles the bronze breast of a goddess in an Italian piazza. In the Prado gallery, where the clothed and the nude Majas of Goya are installed side by side, the former is studied by a lone female and the latter obscured by a crowd of male admirers. There are multiple shots of the marmoreal buttocks of countless shapely sculptures flanked by passersby whose glances speak volumes about the hallowed halls of high art. But there are always other, more somber moments in any Erwitt collection. Here, such pictures include a shot of the bleak railway tracks that led inexorably through the gates of Auschwitz and the bins there of thousands of pairs of eyeglasses that were never worn again.
